Establishing the conflict early. With a longer work it's easy to namby-pamby around and spend 40 or 50 s making sure the characters' hairdos are all perfect and their beds are all made before they start bashing each other's teeth, whereas in a short story you ought to have them banging their shopping carts for instance into each other right in the second paragraph.
That'll get the reader's AND characters' attention, then you can spend the next eight or ten s dissecting these characters so that at the end everyone says, "Oh, THAT was why they were so pissed off about their shoe getting scuffed," and then you're done. When I started writing my stories were all 11 s long—I think I was better at it then. My story in. All three together—an incident which is usually the beginning or the end of the story.
Then when I'm finished writing, that incident is usually the first thing cut, it doesn't mesh with its progeny, like the speck of grit that brings about the pearl. Whereas writing fiction feels more like escapism, and longer fiction even moreso; I have better stamina while exploring someone else's brain.
