This is much more than a picture book — the author provides resources for parents, caregivers and teachers. Included are background on numerous phrases and references within the text — historical events, poetry, and music. These additions allow a broader understanding and encourage more exploration. This book is a treasure for children and people of all ages! This is a book very rich with Black history and beautiful art.

I read it with second graders to practice visualization and to expose them to a culture other than their own they are not all White, but none of them are Black. The illustrations draw the kids in. It's also a great introduction to non-rhyming poetry. At the end of the book there are more details about Black History, so if you miss any of the references in the poetry, it's explained in the end. I didn't go through all of that with my students because they're so young, they need little bite size chunks of information at a time.
